Smart products are identified by the ability to collect and communicate data during their entire life cycle from the manufacturing process up to use by the end customer, or also to independently perform systematized tasks. Smart products develop their transformational effect, in specific, as elements in cyber-physical networks, platforms, clouds and ecosystems that are combined by means of sensors, connectivity solutions and edge computing.

Networks composes of smart products form the precondition for intelligent, learning services (smart services). These are based on the accumulation and analysis of data collected from people, machines and processes and, in particular, allow individually configurable offers to be created by using targeted projections. Smart services can be used for the optimisation of repair and conservation processes, for position planning and for ensuring business continuity, or for designing highly individualized service portfolios. In future, complex, creative networks and transactions will be structured and controlled via decentralized and automated smart services.
